Have you ever tried cara cara oranges? If you haven't, please go buy one immediately. They're orange on the outside, pink on the inside, and way sweeter than a regular navel orange. Frankly, I don't even really like regular oranges. They're just too much work, what with all that peeling, and then trying to avoid seeds and getting juice everywhere. But cara caras are a completely different story. Which is why I've even been using them in smoothies...
Smoothies are great in the winter because using frozen fruit is ideal for them and it's difficult and expensive to get good fresh fruit right now, other than citrus. The Trader Joe's frozen section has great frozen berries, cubed mango, pineapple pieces... You get the idea. Add a little fresh squeezed (cara cara) orange juice and a banana and you have a smoothie. A basic recipe (it's barely a recipe - toss stuff into a blender and blend) that you can adjust for the fruit you have is included below.
Basic Fruit Smoothie Recipe
Makes 1 smoothie
- 1 frozen banana, sliced
- 1 cup frozen fruit (cubed mango and kiwi are a great combo, or a mix of berries)
- juice of 2-3 oranges
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional - this adds a little protein and more fiber)
- 1 teaspoon honey (optional - depending on how sweet your fruit is you likely won't need this)
Add all ingredients to a blender and pulse until smooth. If the mixture is getting stuck use a spoon to stir it. If you're still having issues add a tablespoon or two of water. Serve immediately with a straw (and preferably a drink umbrella).
Note: If you use fresh fruit just add a few ice cubes to the blender to keep the smoothie consistency.
